As part of their training, first-year undergraduate students in our faculty's Department of Social Work visited the Malatya Barrier-Free Life Rehabilitation and Family Counseling Center to gain hands-on experience with social work practices and observe service models for disadvantaged groups. Associate Professor Dr. Ferhat Toper, Head of the Department of Social Work, accompanied them on the visit.
During the program, students were provided comprehensive information by institution administrators about the center's operations, the care and rehabilitation services offered, family counseling processes, individualized care plans, and social integration efforts. Students also had the opportunity to observe how social work interventions are conducted in practice with individuals with special needs.
During the visit, students engaged in an interactive conversation with center staff and expert personnel, asking questions about the dynamics of the profession in the field. The program was also a valuable experience in raising professional awareness, fostering social awareness, and helping students internalize social work values.
Following the visit, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ferhat Toper commented on the importance of integrating theoretical knowledge with field experience in social work education, stating:
Social work is a profession that touches people, is learned in the field, and requires lifelong development. Exposing our students to practice areas early is crucial for strengthening their professional perspectives. I extend my gratitude to the administrators and all the staff at Malatya Barrier-Free Life Rehabilitation and Family Counseling Center for hosting us.
The program ended with a souvenir photo and a thank you to the institution's managers.
